Today Is Falls Prevention Awareness Day!

September 23 Is Falls Prevention Awareness Day

Right at Home of Central New Jersey
Has Important Facts You Should Know

The right people, doing the right things,
the right way, for the right reasons.
Right at Home.

Today is Falls Prevention Awareness Day. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shares some sobering facts and figures about falls among older adults:

  • 1/3 of people older than 65 fall each year.
  • 285,000 of these seniors will suffer a hip fracture.
  • 75 seniors each day die from the results of a fall injury.
  • Fall-related injuries cost Medicare and Medicaid upwards of $40 billion annually.

Talk to your doctor about fall prevention:

  • Discuss your risk factors for falling and ask your healthcare provider to recommend a fall prevention class.
  • Get plenty of exercise. This should include muscle strengthening, aerobic experience, stretching, and balancing activities such as tai chi.
  • Ask your doctor to review all the medications you take, including prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs, and herbal products.
  • Have regular eye examinations and keep your eyeglass and contact lens prescriptions up to date. (Have your hearing checked, too).
  • Wear the right shoes. They should fit well, with a low heel. Ask your doctor if you’re not sure of the best choice of footwear.
  • Clean up spills promptly, replace worn carpeting, and remove throw rugs and clutter – anything in the path that could trip you up.
  • Make home safety improvements. These might include improved lighting, handrails on stairs, and grab bars in the bathroom.
  • Drink alcohol in moderation only, if at all. Our bodies process alcohol more slowly as we grow older.

We can’t prevent every fall but taking the above steps can reduce the risk considerably. For more fall prevention tips, Right at Home of Central New Jersey encourages you to watch this short video from the National Council on Aging on how to prevent falls.

If you or someone you love needs help to live safely in their home or because they are recovering from a fall, please call Beth Sholom, Owner/Executive Director of Right at Home of Central New Jersey to let us know how we can help. We provide care from a few hours a day to overnight shifts to live-in care. We'll work with you and your family to come up with the best plan and we are always available 24/7 to help. We promise we will care for your family as we would care for our own families!

Right at Home Supports The Women's Alzheimer's Movement

Right at Home of Central New Jersey
Support The Women's Alzheimer's Movement

The right people, doing the right things,
the right way, for the right reasons.
Right at Home.

Right at Home of Central New Jersey wants to share why we support The Women's Alzheimer's Movement.

Founded by Maria Shriver, whose father (Sargent Shriver) was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2003, The Women's Alzheimer's Movement is a non-profit organization that focuses through research, education, conferences, Congressional testimony, and fundraising on women's increased risk for Alzheimer's. According to their site, every 65 seconds another person develops Alzheimer's disease and 2/3 of those are women.

We already had a connection with The Women's Alzheimer's Movement (WAM). In April of this year, we let you know that our Ellen Burke (our social media and client satisfaction manager) had been awarded a Caregiver Recharger Grant by WAM for care for her mother. The grants are awarded to people who are the primary caregivers for their family members and Ellen has been doing that for her mother (a former Right at Home of Central New Jersey client) for over 2 years.

WAM has just announced that their annual initiative (Move for Minds) will be held on November 2 in Los Angeles. The conference will feature top brain scientists as well as health and wellness influencers to share stories and learn ways to keep both your body and your brain healthy. Money raised from the conference will be used to conduct more research on women's Alzheimer's research.

Right at Home of Central New Jersey supports the great work that Maria Shriver and The Women's Alzheimer's Movement are doing and we look forward to working with them in the future to find a cure for this awful disease.

We ask that you continue to support our fundraising efforts to "Smash Out Alzheimer's" by participating in our online fundraising events and attending our Smash Out Alzheimer’s fundraising event on November 24, 2019.

Please join our Smash Out Alzheimer's Facebook group to keep up-to-date on all of our fundraising efforts and the Smash Out Alzheimer's event on Sunday, November 24.

September 21 Is World Alzheimer's Day

September 21 Is World Alzheimer's Day

Right at Home of Central New Jersey
Continues to Advocate For and Support Efforts to Smash Out Alzheimer's!

The right people, doing the right things,
the right way, for the right reasons.
Right at Home.

World Alzheimer’s Day is a day on which Alzheimer’s organizations everywhere focus their efforts on raising awareness about Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia and progressively erodes the brain’s abilities, taking memories away from patients as their brains gradually shrink.

Every 65 seconds, someone develops Alzheimer’s disease. At current rates, experts believe the number of Americans living with Alzheimer’s will quadruple to as many as 16 million by the year 2050.

When someone is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, it does not just affect them but affects their friends and family as well. It is painful to watch someone we love decline, suffering from a progressive disease that takes away their memories, limits their ability to live independently, and robs them of their social skills and cognitive thinking ability. And, worst of all, a disease for which there is no cure.

  • 5.7 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s.
  • Alzheimer’s disease is the sixth-leading cause of death in the United States.
  • Alzheimer's disease is the only cause of death among the top 10 in the United States that cannot be prevented, cured or even slowed.

Over our years of service to seniors we at Right at Home of Central New Jersey have seen the decline in so many of our clients who have suffered from Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. Because of that, we are particularly focused on doing what we can to find a cure and, as we have done in the past, are holding our Smash Out Alzheimer’s fundraising event on November 24, 2019 to raise funds for ending this awful disease.

Please join our Smash Out Alzheimer's  Facebook group to keep up-to-date on all of our fundraising efforts and the Smash Out Alzheimer's event on Sunday, November 24.

My Birthday's in Three Months — Where's My Social Security Statement?

It's Time to Sign Up to Receive Your Social Security Statement Online

The right people, doing the right things,
the right way, for the right reasons.
Right at Home.

Up until recently, the Social Security Administration (SSA) mailed statements each year detailing how much money a worker had made in the previous 12 months and projecting the dollar amount of the benefit they would receive when it was time to start collecting Social Security, as well as their Medicare eligibility.

However, that was a lot of postage and paper, reasoned the SSA, so several years ago they stopped mailing statements to people younger than 60, instead inviting them to the mySocialSecurity online portal (www.ssa.gov/myaccount ). People older than 60 still receive a mailed statement — unless they have signed up for a mySocialSecurity account, in which case it's expected that they also will see their statement online.

Unfortunately, reports the Social Security Administration Office of the Inspector General, many people have failed to set up an account, so they may be clueless when it comes to their projected Social Security benefit! The SSA used to mail 155 million statements each year; now they send only 10% of that. Yet only 38 million people have set up a mySocialSecurity account. And a lot of those who have done so are failing to access their accounts regularly.

So, don't have your head in the sand about your Social Security account. Sign up for  mySocialSecurity and make a note on the calendar to take a peek each year, three months before your birthday … or whenever else you need information.

The SSA reminds us that going paperless isn't only about saving money and trees. There are all kinds of useful things you can do with your mySocialSecurity account:

  • See your estimated benefits. This can tell us the amount we will receive, and it can help us decide the best age at which to retire. How much more would we collect if we filed at age 70, versus at the youngest we could (age 62 today)? The difference can be substantial! (For example, check out a sample statement for workers ages 35 – 54, and another for those older than 55.) Especially when we're younger, seeing this number can provide a realistic estimate of how comfortable we'll be in retirement — and how much additional money we’ll need from other retirement accounts to achieve our goals.

  • Check the accuracy of earnings records. Your statement tells you how much money you made every year and your Social Security benefit will be based on that number. So scrutinize that number every year — does the total match your annual statement from your employer? It's a lot easier to catch and deal with an error immediately rather than years down the road.

  • Manage your benefits from the comfort of your own home. On mySocialSecurity, you can file for Social Security, track the status of your application, set up direct deposit to your bank account, apply for Medicare, get a replacement Social Security or Medicare card, change your address and apply for certain other benefits to which you may be entitled.

  • How to create a mySocialSecurity account. If you are older than 18, have a home address, a valid email address and a Social Security number, go to mySocialSecurity and follow the simple instructions. Once you've created your account, you will be able to access your income history and projected monthly Social Security benefit. This is a good time to review your income history.

  • Be sure to keep your password secret. The SSA will ask you to create a security question. Notify the SSA right away if you think your account has been compromised. (And one more smart thing to do: Educate yourself about crooks who impersonate Social Security — the SSA provides information and updates on this epidemic on the Social Security Matters blog.)

  • What else can I do on the Social Security website? The SSA website (www.ssa.gov) offers all sorts of other information and resources. It's a good place to research some of the complexities of the system. Of course, when it comes to really complicated issues, one of the most useful resources on the site is the good old-fashioned phone number or the Social Security Office Locator, where you can find the address of your local office.

Right at Home of Central New Jersey Celebrates National Rehabilitation Awareness Week

Right at Home of Central New Jersey
Celebrates National Rehabilitation AwarenessWeek

The right people, doing the right things,
the right way, for the right reasons.
Right at Home.
This week is National Rehabilitation Awareness Week. Since 1996, this week has recognized all of the rehabilitation professionals who work every day to better the lives of their patients and clients. The theme of this year's week is "Helping People, Healing Lives".

One of the goals of National Rehabilitation Awareness Week is to educate people about the benefits and positive impacts of rehabilitation. Rehabilitation is an important tool:

  • for individuals coming out of a hospital
  • for those who are healing and need assistance in becoming independent and being able to manage their activities of daily living (ADL)
  • for disabled adults to help them live up their fullest potential

Right at Home of Central New Jersey thanks all of the physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists who work with our clients and their families to "help people and heal lives".

If you or your family member has returned home from a hospital stay and is undergoing rehabilitation and needs assistance as they recover, Right at Home of Central New Jersey can have our highly skilled caregivers help your family member every day by providing companionship, bath visits, grocery shopping, meal preparation, transportation to rehab and/or doctor visits, and medication reminders. Please call Beth Sholom, Owner/Executive Director of  Right at Home of Central New Jersey   and ask her to tell you about our RightTransitions Program can help you and your family.

We provide care from a few hours a day to overnight shifts to live-in care. We'll work with you to come up with the best plan for your family and always be available 24/7 to help. We care for your family as we would for our own!
