A New Definition of Healthy Aging

Right at Home of Central New Jersey
Wants You to Know About Healthy Aging

The right people, doing the right things,
the right way, for the right reasons.
Right at Home.

Evelyn has arthritis and is living with significant vision loss. But she stays active. She has regular healthcare appointments, goes to exercise class, and works with a physical therapist and low-vision specialist to learn new ways of doing things. "I’m in great health!" she assures her family and friends.

Sandra has similar health challenges. She doesn't get out much anymore. She focuses on her aches and pains. She often feels as if her life is over, and she would describe her health as "poor."

We read so much about "healthy aging" these days. But what is "healthy aging"? What does it mean to "age successfully"? These aren't small questions! According to Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health Dean Linda P. Fried, today 16% of Americans are older than 65, and by 2035, that age group will grow to 20%.

So it's time to re-examine the meaning of "healthy aging," and to support seniors in achieving it. For a long time, the emphasis was on prevention — lowering the risk of disabling and life-limiting health conditions. Prevention is a very important focus, of course. We can improve our odds of avoiding health problems by taking steps such as getting enough exercise, eating well, getting our immunizations and having regular healthcare appointments.

Yet we can do all those things, and still experience health challenges. It might be our genes, or other factors not in our control. We can't say for sure why some seniors will sail through life hardly touched by illness, while others will deal with a whole collection of health problems. But are only the seniors with few health problems experiencing "healthy aging"?

Today, the thinking is changing. Experts point out that our longer lifespan means we have more years to develop health problems. Instead of defining "healthy aging" as an absence of health problems, they say that how we manage our health conditions is the true measure.

Here are some of the key factors in managing health conditions:

Quality healthcare.  Many diseases that in the past were inevitably debilitating and even fatal are now manageable — everything from hypertension to arthritis pain to osteoporosis to heart problems. Many seniors are living with one or more chronic illnesses while still feeling pretty healthy! We're encouraged to be active partners in our healthcare by following the doctor's recommendations, managing our medications, and if we have disabilities, learning new ways to do the things we love.

A good support system.  People need people, and when a senior is living with health challenges, the help of others makes all the difference. For many people, their spouse, adult children or other family fill that role. And others are creating families of choice, getting help from volunteers, and taking advantage of professional care, which might mean moving to a senior support community or using  in-home care services.

A positive attitude.  Sandra and Evelyn, above, are good examples — Sandra feels that her life is over, while Evelyn says, "I live a good, fulfilled life." Yes, this is partly a matter of an individual's personality and how they weather difficulty. But we can nurture a better attitude. Seniors who find themselves overwhelmed by negative thoughts should discuss it with their doctor. They may be suffering from depression. Counseling and support groups can help.

Support on all levels for healthy aging

As you were reading about Sandra and Evelyn, did you find yourself judging Sandra for having a negative attitude? Would it make a difference to know that Evelyn has excellent health insurance, a supportive family, accessible housing and a full program of activities at her local senior center — while Sandra does not?

It's easy to tell a person to "take charge" and "have a better attitude." But an individual's circumstances can make doing so that much harder.

On the federal and state levels, adequate funding and innovative senior support services are so important. There's a movement to promote age-friendly communities, and this will be key for the well-being of seniors in the future. Planners have been creating a blueprint of such a community, which includes:

  • Good healthcare and the ability to pay for it.
  • Community services for seniors.
  • Support for people living with dementia.
  • Affordable, accessible housing.
  • Transportation options.
  • Social inclusion, including intergenerational activities.
  • Employment or volunteer service opportunities.
  • Public spaces that are suited for people of all abilities.

We will all benefit by changing our definition of "healthy aging." The first step is to stop judging seniors by the standards of younger people. Older adults don't face challenges "because they’re old" — instead, the challenges are caused by health conditions. Most of us, if we live long enough, will face those challenges. Putting supports in place for today's seniors will increase our own chances of healthy aging.

Right at Home of Central New Jersey Reminds You to Get Your Flu Shot

Right at Home of Central New Jersey
Reminds You to Get Your Flu Shot!

The right people, doing the right things,
the right way, for the right reasons.
Right at Home.

Did you get your flu shot yet?

Doctors recommend that almost everyone should get an annual flu shot, beginning around October. Of course, it's easy to procrastinate.

Never fear! If you haven't had the flu yet this year, count yourself lucky and go get your shot. December is typically the beginning of peak flu season so getting vaccinated now can spare you from a miserable week and even life-threatening complications. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says that each year more than 200,000 people in the U.S. are hospitalized due to flu complications and thousands of deaths each year are flu-related. People with asthma, diabetes, heart disease and a number of other chronic health conditions are more vulnerable to complications. And people older than 65, even if they are healthy, are at higher risk.

If you're tempted to skip your flu shot, remember that by lowering your own risk of the flu you're lowering the risk for others. Our immune systems weaken as we grow older and the effectiveness of the flu vaccine varies from year to year so a senior who is vaccinated might nonetheless come down with the flu if exposed to someone who has it. And while the flu vaccination is the most valuable health tool you can use to prevent getting the flu, there are also other things you can do in your every day life to stay healthy. Click on this CDC link to see what they recommend.

The flu vaccine is available as a shot or as a nasal spray. The CDC does NOT recommend the nasal spray vaccine for people older than 49. Seniors also may receive a new higher-dose version of the flu shot , which has been found to be almost 25 percent more effective for older adults. The CDC cautions people of every age with chronic illnesses to consult with their healthcare provider about the form of the vaccine that is safest and most effective for their condition.

Getting a flu shot is simple and these days it is almost painless. The flu shot is offered at doctors' offices, clinics, health departments, pharmacies and senior centers. Most health insurance plans, including Medicare, cover the cost of the flu shot but please check with your own health plan for details of coverage.

Don't be tempted to skip your shot because you were vaccinated last year. Flu viruses are constantly changing, and so is the annual flu vaccine. One year's shot most likely won't protect you against the next year's strains.

So take the time to get your flu shot and help older loved ones be immunized as well. You can go together, or if your loved one is helped by one of our great Right at Home of Central New Jersey caregivers, they can transport you or your loved one to the doctor's office or pharmacy.

Visit Flu.gov to learn more about this year's flu vaccine recommendations, how to avoid catching or spreading the flu, where to find a flu shot and what you should do if you or an elderly loved one does catch the flu.

(The information in this article is not intended to replace the advice of your healthcare provider. If you have questions about the flu, flu vaccine or what to do if you get the flu, talk to your doctor.)

Today Is Falls Prevention Awareness Day!

September 23 Is Falls Prevention Awareness Day

Right at Home of Central New Jersey
Has Important Facts You Should Know

The right people, doing the right things,
the right way, for the right reasons.
Right at Home.

Today is Falls Prevention Awareness Day. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shares some sobering facts and figures about falls among older adults:

  • 1/3 of people older than 65 fall each year.
  • 285,000 of these seniors will suffer a hip fracture.
  • 75 seniors each day die from the results of a fall injury.
  • Fall-related injuries cost Medicare and Medicaid upwards of $40 billion annually.

Talk to your doctor about fall prevention:

  • Discuss your risk factors for falling and ask your healthcare provider to recommend a fall prevention class.
  • Get plenty of exercise. This should include muscle strengthening, aerobic experience, stretching, and balancing activities such as tai chi.
  • Ask your doctor to review all the medications you take, including prescriptions, over-the-counter drugs, and herbal products.
  • Have regular eye examinations and keep your eyeglass and contact lens prescriptions up to date. (Have your hearing checked, too).
  • Wear the right shoes. They should fit well, with a low heel. Ask your doctor if you’re not sure of the best choice of footwear.
  • Clean up spills promptly, replace worn carpeting, and remove throw rugs and clutter – anything in the path that could trip you up.
  • Make home safety improvements. These might include improved lighting, handrails on stairs, and grab bars in the bathroom.
  • Drink alcohol in moderation only, if at all. Our bodies process alcohol more slowly as we grow older.

We can’t prevent every fall but taking the above steps can reduce the risk considerably. For more fall prevention tips, Right at Home of Central New Jersey encourages you to watch this short video from the National Council on Aging on how to prevent falls.

If you or someone you love needs help to live safely in their home or because they are recovering from a fall, please call Beth Sholom, Owner/Executive Director of Right at Home of Central New Jersey to let us know how we can help. We provide care from a few hours a day to overnight shifts to live-in care. We'll work with you and your family to come up with the best plan and we are always available 24/7 to help. We promise we will care for your family as we would care for our own families!

Right at Home Supports The Women's Alzheimer's Movement

Right at Home of Central New Jersey
Support The Women's Alzheimer's Movement

The right people, doing the right things,
the right way, for the right reasons.
Right at Home.

Right at Home of Central New Jersey wants to share why we support The Women's Alzheimer's Movement.

Founded by Maria Shriver, whose father (Sargent Shriver) was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2003, The Women's Alzheimer's Movement is a non-profit organization that focuses through research, education, conferences, Congressional testimony, and fundraising on women's increased risk for Alzheimer's. According to their site, every 65 seconds another person develops Alzheimer's disease and 2/3 of those are women.

We already had a connection with The Women's Alzheimer's Movement (WAM). In April of this year, we let you know that our Ellen Burke (our social media and client satisfaction manager) had been awarded a Caregiver Recharger Grant by WAM for care for her mother. The grants are awarded to people who are the primary caregivers for their family members and Ellen has been doing that for her mother (a former Right at Home of Central New Jersey client) for over 2 years.

WAM has just announced that their annual initiative (Move for Minds) will be held on November 2 in Los Angeles. The conference will feature top brain scientists as well as health and wellness influencers to share stories and learn ways to keep both your body and your brain healthy. Money raised from the conference will be used to conduct more research on women's Alzheimer's research.

Right at Home of Central New Jersey supports the great work that Maria Shriver and The Women's Alzheimer's Movement are doing and we look forward to working with them in the future to find a cure for this awful disease.

We ask that you continue to support our fundraising efforts to "Smash Out Alzheimer's" by participating in our online fundraising events and attending our Smash Out Alzheimer’s fundraising event on November 24, 2019.

Please join our Smash Out Alzheimer's Facebook group to keep up-to-date on all of our fundraising efforts and the Smash Out Alzheimer's event on Sunday, November 24.

Right at Home of Central New Jersey Celebrates National Rehabilitation Awareness Week

Right at Home of Central New Jersey
Celebrates National Rehabilitation AwarenessWeek

The right people, doing the right things,
the right way, for the right reasons.
Right at Home.
This week is National Rehabilitation Awareness Week. Since 1996, this week has recognized all of the rehabilitation professionals who work every day to better the lives of their patients and clients. The theme of this year's week is "Helping People, Healing Lives".

One of the goals of National Rehabilitation Awareness Week is to educate people about the benefits and positive impacts of rehabilitation. Rehabilitation is an important tool:

  • for individuals coming out of a hospital
  • for those who are healing and need assistance in becoming independent and being able to manage their activities of daily living (ADL)
  • for disabled adults to help them live up their fullest potential

Right at Home of Central New Jersey thanks all of the physical therapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists who work with our clients and their families to "help people and heal lives".

If you or your family member has returned home from a hospital stay and is undergoing rehabilitation and needs assistance as they recover, Right at Home of Central New Jersey can have our highly skilled caregivers help your family member every day by providing companionship, bath visits, grocery shopping, meal preparation, transportation to rehab and/or doctor visits, and medication reminders. Please call Beth Sholom, Owner/Executive Director of  Right at Home of Central New Jersey   and ask her to tell you about our RightTransitions Program can help you and your family.

We provide care from a few hours a day to overnight shifts to live-in care. We'll work with you to come up with the best plan for your family and always be available 24/7 to help. We care for your family as we would for our own!

Right at Home of Central New Jersey Press Release for Smash Out Alzheimer's

Right at Home of Central New Jersey
Press Release With All the Information About Why We Are So Passionate About Our
Smash Out Alzheimer's Event

The right people, doing the right things,
the right way, for the right reasons.
Right at Home.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – SEPTEMBER 10, 2019

RIGHT AT HOME OF CENTRAL NEW JERSEY PRESENTS OUR SECOND ANNUAL “SMASH-OUT ALZHEIMER’S” EVENT

East Brunswick (Right at Home of Central New Jersey) - Right at Home of Central New Jersey will host and sponsor our second annual Smash-Out Alzheimer’s event, an exciting day of pumpkin smashing, live music, holiday fair, service and food vendors, gift baskets, and much more at Mattison Crossing Assisted Living located at 93 Manalapan Avenue, Freehold, New Jersey on Sunday, November 24, 2019 from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm. Our Smash-Out Alzheimer’s event will benefit Alzheimer’s New Jersey.

There will be pumpkin painting, pumpkin smashing, music, entertainment and service providers, as well as local businesses and artisans selling such things as handbags, holiday decorations and crafts. We’ll also have plenty of delicious food for sale plus a holiday vendor fair.

Right at Home of Central New Jersey has already completed 2 successful Facebook fundraisers with Pampered Chef and LuLaRoe. We also have 2 Facebook fundraisers currently running, one with Yankee Candle (which runs through January 8, 2020) and the other selling pumpkin-shaped pasta with Fun Pasta Fundraising. (For our prior Smash-Out Alzheimer’s event, we also partnered with a number of restaurants, such as Cheeburger Cheeburger, Chipotle, Moe’s Southwest Grill and Coldstone Creamery throughout the year to expand our fundraising efforts beyond our major event, Smash-Out Alzheimer’s, and continue to fundraise throughout the entire year).

Because so many of Right at Home of Central New Jersey’s past and present clients suffer from Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, we are proud to announce that we are forming a 501c3 tax-exempt organization to be able to raise funds for Alzheimer’s-related organizations on an ongoing basis all year long. Beth Sholom, Owner/Executive Director of Right at Home of Central New Jersey, has long been passionate about giving back to the community we serve. Her motto is that we always treat and advocate for our clients the way we would our own family and her charitable works and fundraising efforts to raise money for numerous charities underscores her passion and commitment to serve and better the lives of the senior population.

Over our years of service to seniors we have seen the decline in so many of our clients who have suffered from Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. Because of that, we are particularly focused on doing what we can to find a cure. Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease that takes away the ability of a person to live independently, as well as robbing them of the social skills and cognitive thinking abilities we all take for granted.

About Right at Home of Central New Jersey

Since 2002, Right at Home of Central New Jersey has offered senior care services to Middlesex and Northern Monmouth county residents. Right at Home of Central New Jersey offers in-home companionship and personal care and assistance to seniors and disabled adults who want to continue to live independently.  While in the comfort and familiarity of their homes, Right at Home of Central New Jersey caregivers provide individualized care by following care plans that are tailored to each client’s unique needs. Right at Home of Central New Jersey provides care on an hourly or live-in basis and provides guidance and emotional support to their clients every step of the way.

A great percentage of our clients suffer from Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of dementia and Beth Sholom, Owner/Executive Director of Right at Home of Central New Jersey, is passionate about finding a cure for this insidious disease and hopes that this event and all of our ongoing fundraising events this year and in the future will continue to raise awareness as well as provide significant funds to donate to Alzheimer’s-related charities.

Right at Home of Central New Jersey Celebrates National Assisted Living Week

Right at Home of Central New Jersey
Celebrates National Assisted Living Week

The right people, doing the right things,
the right way, for the right reasons.
Right at Home.

This week is National Assisted Living Week. Created as an annual observance in 1995 by the National Center for Assisted Living, the week celebrates all the great work that assisted living staff and caregivers provide for the 1 million assisted living residents in the United States. This year's theme for National Assisted Living Week is "A Spark of Creativity".

That theme was chosen to inspire assisted living residents, their caregivers and assisted living staff. We all know the benefits of having art in our lives and during National Assisted Living Week, assisted living residents are encouraged to explore art therapy. Art therapy can provide many benefits to seniors including improving social skills and increasing their cognitive and sensory motor functions.

Caregivers who work with assisted living residents can help improve the quality of their clients' lives by coming up with innovative and new things that could inspire their clients. And the staff at assisted living facilities work together to provide unique and new activities, such as music therapy, that can help improve the quality of their residents' lives.

Right at Home of Central New Jersey  is proud to support our Assisted Living partners, as well as our many caregivers who work with our clients in assisted living facilities to improve the quality of their lives every day.

Happy Grandparents Day from Right at Home!

Right at Home of Central New Jersey
Celebrates Grandparents Today!

The right people, doing the right things,
the right way, for the right reasons.
Right at Home.

In 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a federal proclamation declaring the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day.

Grandparents Day was created to honor all grandparents and their role in helping our families and communities. Many grandparents provide care and support not only for their children but for their grandchildren as well.

While Grandparents Day was established first in America, the concept of it has spread around the world and now many countries, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom all celebrate the day at some point throughout the calendar year.

The purposes behind Grandparents Day  are threefold: to honor grandparents, to provide grandparents with an opportunity to show love to their children's children, and to make everyone aware of the strength, information and guidance that older people can offer to all of us.

Right at Home of Central New Jersey is proud to provide care to our clients who are grandparents. We thank them for all that they do for their families and we honor them not only today but every day!

If your grandparents need help with activities of daily living, please call Beth Sholom, Owner/Executive Director of Right at Home of Central New Jersey to let us know how we can help them. We provide care from a few hours a day to overnight shifts to live-in care. We'll work with you to come up with the best plan for your grandparents and always be available 24/7 to help. We'll care for your grandparents as we would for our own!
