Did You Know That You Can Borrow Medical Equipment? Right at Home of Central New Jersey Shows You How

Did You Know That You Can
Borrow Medical Equipment?
Right at Home of Central New Jersey
Shows You How

The right people, doing the right things,
the right way, for the right reasons.
Right at Home.

Sometimes things happen to you or one of your loved ones and you find that you need medical equipment for them. Or you might be having your grandparents (who need some mobility assist equipment) visit over the holidays, or you or a family member are housebound as you recover or rehab from an injury or fall.

The medical equipment you need could be something as simple as a walker or something as costly as a Hoyer lift. You may not need the equipment forever but you do need it for now. Will your insurance company cover the medical equipment? It depends on what type of insurance you have and for how long you need the equipment. There's got to be a better solution than paying for it out of pocket, right? There is and Right at Home of Central New Jersey has some good ideas to help you locate the equipment you need.

Because having medical equipment to help you or your family members is NOT a luxury but a necessity, consider borrowing medical equipment. You could possibly need a shower chair, crutches or a tub transfer bench and the cost of these things is not always factored into your cost to recover from an illness or injury, or may not be covered if you need the equipment for a short-term visitor to your home.

The first place to start is to ask your doctor if he or she knows of any place that lends medical equipment on a short-term basis. Another thing to do is check with local churches or synagogues or government agencies to see if they have any resources for you. Check with the Salvation Army or The United Way or other charitable organizations like The Society of St. Vincent DePaul. This link will direct you to all types of resources to find where and how you can borrow medical equipment.

Just like you'd ask your car dealer for a loaner vehicle when your car is in the shop for repairs, so too should you consider renting medical equipment when you need it on a short-term or temporary basis. A little research now can save you lots of money in the long run.

Right at Home of Central New Jersey is always searching for ways to help our clients and their families get the best possible care and have access to the best (and most cost-effective) health care products. We hope this information will be helpful to you if and when you or your family member needs it.

The Equifax Data Breach - Are You Eligible to Be Compensated?

The Equifax Data Breach Settlement -
Are You Eligible for Monetary Compensation?

Right at Home of Central New Jersey
Has the Information You Need to Know

The right people, doing the right things,
the right way, for the right reasons.
Right at Home.

Last year we let you know about the dangers of financial scams and how you could protect yourself through a subscription to IDShield which can monitor your financial accounts, monitor your social media presence and restore your identity should you become a victim of identity theft.

You may recall that in 2017 Equifax (one of the 3 major credit reporting bureaus) experienced a massive data breach, exposing the names, addresses, birthdates and social security numbers of 147 million Americans.

Last week Equifax settled with the Federal Trade Commission for $700 million, including $425 million for compensating individuals whose personal and private information may have been exposed. Do you know if your information was compromised? Are you eligible for financial compensation? Here's how to find out.

Go the Equifax Data Breach Settlement website You will be asked to answer a few simple questions which will determine whether you have been affected by the breach. If you have, you have the option of (1) 10 years of free credit monitoring or (2) a $125 cash settlement (if you are already monitoring your credit).

The court handling the settlement is expected to finalize it in early December and payments (if that's the option you choose) are expected after that. One important thing to note is that if you can document that you had to spend your own time trying to restore any data that was compromised or shared, you are entitled to an additional $25 per hour.

You need to take action on filing a claim by January 22, 2020. If you do not opt out of the class action settlement or file a claim, you will give up your right to sue Equifax directly or get the free credit monitoring or receive the cash settlement.

We at Right at Home of Central New Jersey know how vulnerable our seniors can be and we want to make sure that they (and their friends and families) have their personal and financial information protected so we are happy to share this information with you and hope you will share it with those you love.

Right at Home of Central New Jersey Wants You to Stay Healthy By Getting All the Vaccinations You Need

"I'm Over 65 - What Shots Do I Need?"
Right at Home of Central New Jersey
Has the Information You Need

The right people, doing the right things,
the right way, for the right reasons.
Right at Home.

You probably get a flu shot every year but, very often, we forget as adults that many of the vaccinations we received as children need booster shots to keep them active as we age.

Because our immune systems weaken as we age, it can be more difficult for our bodies to fight off diseases and those diseases can cause serious complications. Another important thing to consider is that when you keep your vaccinations up-to-date, you're not only protecting yourself but protecting young children (who may not be old enough to be vaccinated yet) or other people (who may not be able to be vaccinated for certain medical reasons). A perfect example of this is the measles outbreak occurring in America this year from people who made the decision not to have their children vaccinated.

There are people who don't think vaccinations are safe or that they can catch the disease from the vaccine itself. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention vaccinations are throughly tested before licensing and are carefully monitored even after they are licensed to ensure that they are very safe. The CDC publishes a recommended list of vaccinations by age and also has a quiz that you can take that will recommend vaccines based on your age, health condition, and other factors.

If you're concerned about the cost of vaccines, Medicare Part B typically covers the cost of flu shots, pneumococcal vaccinations and the hepatitis B vaccination (if you're at increased risk for hepatitis B because of a medical condition such as diabetes). And, in general, Medicare Part D covers all other types of shots (like the shingles vaccination) that are needed to prevent illness. (Of course, you should check with your Medicare Part D insurer to find out what shots they cover and what, if any, copay is required).

You can get many of the vaccinations needed at your primary care physician's office but you can also get many of the shots done at a local pharmacy (such as Walgreens ) which can be done on a walk-in or scheduled appointment basis. Most pharmacies will accept Medicare for payment of these vaccinations as well.

Once you've gotten all of your necessary vaccinations, it's a good idea to keep an up-to-date list of what shots you've had and when you've had them and provide a copy to your primary care physician as well as family members.

We at Right at Home of Central New Jersey always keep up-to-date on our vaccinations and we ask that all of our employees and caregivers keep up-to-date on theirs as well, not only for their own health but for the health of everyone they work with.

Right at Home of Central New Jersey Celebrates "National Hire a Veteran Day"!

Right at Home of Central New Jersey
Celebrates "National Hire a Veteran Day"

The right people, doing the right things,
the right way, for the right reasons.
Right at Home.

Right at Home of Central New Jersey is proud that we have always been able to serve our veterans and their families and are honored and privileged to do so every day.

As children of veterans (Zane Reisman, father of Beth Sholom, Owner/Executive Director, and the late Vincent Burke, father of Ellen Burke, Social Media Manager), we always do our best to serve all veterans to our very best abilities and we always look for opportunities to hire veterans as well.

Today, July 25, is National Hire a Veteran Day, a day designed to remind all employers to consider our highly trained and qualified veterans to fill their open positions. Employers looking for workers are encouraged to visit the Hire Our Heroes website which focuses on bringing veteran job seekers and potential employers together.

One of our fellow Right at Home franchise owners, Mike Steiner of the Right at Home office in Northern Lake County, Illinois, makes hiring veterans a priority. As a former Navy veteran, reaching out to and hiring veterans is a personal cause for him.

We are proud to be part of the Right at Home organization which works with veterans groups and associations on a regular basis to provide the best possible care to our veterans and to help them find the benefits that they are entitled too.

If you are a veteran or if your family member is a veteran and you need assistance in helping them continue to life safely at home, please contact Beth Sholom, Owner/Executive Director of Right at Home of Central New Jersey at 732-967-0900 or beth@rahcentral.com.

Vacations for Seniors With Limited Mobility

How To Plan an Accessible Vacation With Your Senior Loved One When They Have Limited Mobility

The right people, doing the right things,
the right way, for the right reasons.
Right at Home.

Our Right at Home of Central New Jersey social media manager, Ellen, recently went on a mini-vacation with her family, including her Mom (a former Right at Home client) who uses a walker and has mobility issues. Planning the trip was difficult and it didn't work out the way they all had hoped. Ellen wishes she had this good advice from our Right at Home corporate blog before she had planned this trip and hopes it will help you plan your own senior trip.

Consider your specific health needs

Before you settle on a travel destination, think through your health challenges and needs. Do you need wheelchair accessibility or assistance with mobility? Do you use portable oxygen or other assistive equipment? Will you drive, fly or take a bus or train? Will you need an adaptive hotel room with ramps and a roll-in shower? Do you need to refrigerate any medication? What weather conditions are most favorable for you?

Plan ahead, book early

If you have limited mobility, it is best to call travel companies to get details on special accommodations. Can you take your wheelchair or walker on the plane, train or bus? The AARP provides  tips for physically challenged travelers and recommends talking through your travel needs with airlines and other vacation providers before you make reservations. Once you have booked your reservations with the necessary travel accommodations, be sure to call the travel provider 48 to 24 hours before your arrival to confirm the arrangements.

If you’re flying and can afford to do so, consider upgrading to first class for more room on the airplane and to gain access to the airport lounge for the space and convenience it offers prior to boarding. Selecting an aisle seat will help if you need extra assistance and will make trips to the restroom easier. Be sure to ask about special equipment storage onboard and any additional fees. You may also need a doctor’s letter of approval for certain types of travel.

Allow extra time

If you need to use an on-site wheelchair at the airport or travel terminal, reserve one when you make your travel reservations or ask in advance for an attendant to transport you. On your travel day, it may take several minutes for the wheelchair or attendant to reach you, so allow additional time in your schedule. Security checks may also take more time. For further details on security procedures, check with the Transportation Security Administration or call TSA Cares at 855-787-2227.

Research your accommodations

Does your motel, hotel, cabin, vacation house, etc. have adequate wheelchair ramps and elevators to your floor and room? Talk directly to the on-site manager or staff of where you will stay about your mobility needs and whether the facility is fully equipped to make your stay safe and comfortable.

Check mobility access around your vacation site

Visitor guides may not tell you the accessibility information you need to know. Instead, call the destination city’s transportation services you plan to use and the specific attractions, parks, museums and other vacation spots you plan to visit and ask about smooth sidewalks, curb ramps, building entrances, elevators and other mobility accommodations. The AARP, AAA, the Society for Accessible Travel & Hospitality  (SATH) and WheelchairTravel.org may also prove to be helpful travel resources.

Wheelchair-Accessible U.S. Cities and Parks

A number of U.S. cities and parks are welcoming travel destinations for seniors and those who need special assistance. Click on this link to find out if your destination is one of these mobility-friendly vacation locations.

The National Park Service offers a free, lifetime Access Pass to all U.S. citizens or permanent residents with a permanent disability. The pass grants complimentary admission to national parks, national wildlife refuges and many national forest lands. In addition, consider this list of  top parks and trails for disabled access  nationwide.

Vacation and Travel Discounts for Seniors

Amtrak, Greyhound and many airlines, hotels, car rental companies and restaurants offer  travel discounts for seniors . For example, Alamo offers up to 25 percent off a rental car if seniors are AARP members. Also, check out these senior travel discounts  and where to find them. In addition, the National Park Service provides a  Senior Pass and the Access Pass  to gain admission to the more than 2,000 federal recreation sites.

If you are a senior with mobility issues or you have a family member with mobility issues and are thinking of traveling, our Right at Home of Central New Jersey caregivers can accompany you or your family member to help them enjoy their vacation while staying safe. Please contact Beth Sholom, Owner/Executive Director of Right at Home of Central New Jersey at 732-967-0900 or beth@rahcentral.com if you need help for yourself or your loved ones.
