Staying Cool During the Heat Wave Is So Important

Wants to Make Sure You Stay Cool
During Our Heat Wave

The right people, doing the right things,
the right way, for the right reasons.
Right at Home.

With the weather experts predicting excessive heat (and very high humidity) throughout most of the country for the next few days, getting overheated or dehydrated can happen sooner than you think. It's important to stay cool and hydrated at all times so as not to suffer the effects of heat stroke. Here are some tips Right at Home of Central New Jersey wants to share with you to make sure you, your loved ones, your friends and your neighbors are all safe during this hot weather.

Staying hydrated and cool can be done in many different ways. For example, keeping ice packs on hand if you have to be outside is very important and, if you do have to be outside, try to stay in cooler and shaded areas as much as possible and wear both sunglasses and a hat to protect your head from the heat. You can also tie a wet cloth around your neck to keep your skin feeling cool.

Drinking as much water as possible is not only the best but most efficient way of staying hydrated. (Avoid any type of caffeinated drink or alcohol). And don't wait until you're thirsty to drink water because you can already be starting to get dehydrated by then. There are other ways to stay hydrated as well.

Keep frozen ice pops in your freezer and snack on them when you can. There are many fruits and vegetables such as cucumbers, watermelon and grapefruit that have a high water content and can help keep you hydrated and feeling refreshed.

If you have air conditioning in your home, make sure your keep your curtains or blinds closed during the day to not only keep the heat out but to help your air conditioning system cool your house more quickly and efficiently. If you don't have air conditioning at home, check with your local town government to find the location of cooling centers such as malls, libraries and senior centers.

It's a good idea to ask your doctor about your medications. It's not well known but there are medications that are not as effective if they're stored or exposed to higher temperatures. Ask your doctor if any medication you take might be one of these.

Be aware of the signs of being overheated. If you or someone you love is experiencing any of these symptoms, please seek immediate medical help:
  • nausea
  • headaches
  • fainting
  • trouble breathing

Finally, please remember to check in on your elderly neighbors, friends and loved ones to make sure that they are OK during the heat wave. They will most surely appreciate that you did and you may be sparing them the effects of heat stroke, dehydration or hyperthermia.
