Family Caregivers Need a Vacation Too - Let
Right at Home of Central New Jersey Help You!

The right people, doing the right things,
the right way, for the right reasons.
Right at Home.

Americans have been described as "vacation deprived," tied only with workers from Japan and Thailand in taking the fewest number of vacation days.

Many workers say they simply can't take days off from work. They say no one can fill in for them, or they fear that taking time off will affect their careers. Now, add family caregiving responsibilities to the mix! Workers who also are providing care for an elderly or disabled love one often use up all their vacation time — a day here, a day there, taking their loved one to the doctor or helping with paperwork and hands-on care.

If you're a family caregiver, the obstacles to taking a vacation might seem insurmountable. But it's worthwhile to brainstorm ways to overcome these obstacles, because many studies reveal the health benefits of vacationing.

Here are challenges that keep caregivers from taking a vacation, and ways to overcome those challenges:

  • Money. The budget can be tight for family caregivers. The AARP reports that caregivers spend an average of $7,000 per year caring for their loved one, and many have cut back on their paid work hours or even left work entirely. But taking a vacation need not be terribly expensive. Look for discounts and travel packages. Can out-of-town friends and family host you or have an available vacation home or timeshare? Or try a "staycation" and spend a weekend at a local spa or play tourist in your own town by checking out local attractions.

  • Their loved ones' care needs. If you worry about how your loved one would be safe and cared for while you're gone, there are options. Talk to friends and family and ask them to step in while you’re gone. Or check out respite care. Many retirement communities, assisted living facilities and nursing homes offer short-term stays. Even better, check out professional in-home care services from Right at Home of Central New Jersey. We can provide supervision and assistance with personal care, meal preparation, medication reminders, even housekeeping — in other words, all the things you do and more.

  • Time. Maybe you use all your vacation days providing care for your loved one. If this is the case, consider that hiring in-home care year-round could free up some of those days. Whether it's for a week or on an ongoing basis, talk to other family members about sharing the cost of home care. They may not realize all that you do or how much you spend. They may be willing to share the cost, happy that it's a way they can do their part.

  • Guilt. If the person you care for is your spouse or a parent who relies on you alone for care, you might think that going away for a week will be very hard for them. Remind your loved one (and yourself) that taking some time off is good for your health — and for your relationship.

  • Long-distance caregiving. If you are one of the millions of caregivers coordinating the care of loved ones from afar, you probably use most of your vacation time visiting them. If your loved one's condition makes it possible, travel with them to a pleasant vacation destination. Or, if you're traveling to visit a senior loved one, schedule a few extra days just for yourself somewhere nearby. (Feeling guilty? Reread the item above this one!)

Going on vacation is so important. You will return refreshed, with your emotional batteries recharged — making you a better employee and certainly a better caregiver for your loved one.

Please call us today to discover how in-home care from Right at Home of Central New Jersey can help you or your family member! We can provide care from a few hours a day a few days a week to overnight shifts to live-in care. We will partner with you to come up with the best plan for your family and always be available 24/7 to help. We care for your family as we would for our own!

Here Are Some Great Smart Phone Apps to Help Seniors

Here Are Some Great Smartphone Apps That Right at Home of Central New Jersey
Thinks You Should Know About

The right people, doing the right things,
the right way, for the right reasons.
Right at Home.

Whether you are a senior living on your own or your parent is living alone and you want to help them age in place safely, there are lots of smartphone apps that can be downloaded (many of them at no cost) that can be very helpful.

Instacart will delivery groceries (including fresh fruit and frozen goods) to your house, usually within 2 hours, for a small fee. If you have trouble carrying heavy grocery bags or don't drive, using Instacart or one of the other grocery delivery options can be not only a timesaver but a godsend. For heavier or bulkier items (think big bags of pet food or supersized bottles of laundry detergent), Amazon can deliver in as little as one day to your home.

Life360 is a free app that lets family members set up a circle to keep track of each other's locations and plan events. It also has an alert feature that allows you to send a Help Alert to all of your emergency contacts should you fall or feel unsafe. A similar app called Red Panic Button lets users push a button and have their location be sent as a Google map link via text messages to all of your contacts.

Keeping on top of when to take your medications and making sure they're refilled on a timely basis can be a challenge for anyone but there are free apps like Medisafe which send you reminders when it's time to take your medicines and when your prescriptions are due for a refill. You can also designate family members and caregivers to get the same alerts as a back-up.

If you or your loved one wants to test to see if there is hearing loss, download the free hearScreenUSA app . The app allows you to do a simple hearing test and, if hearing loss is detected, the app will connect you with a verified audiologist for further testing and treatment.

If you or your loved one doesn't drive, consider a ride-sharing app like Uber or Lyft to schedule rides to doctor appointments or other places you need to be. Once you sign up and designate a payment method, getting a ride is as simple as pushing a button on your phone.

There are lots of other great (and free) apps on your phone that you can investigate to keep track of expenses, play brain games to keep your mind sharp, listen to music, read books and all types of things. It's worth looking into so that you can be prepared for all things!

****************************************************************

While having apps on your phone is a great idea, please remember that Right at Home of Central New Jersey can have our highly skilled caregivers help you and your family do grocery shopping and provide medication reminders and drive you anywhere you or your loved one need to be. Please call Beth Sholom, Owner/Executive Director of Right at Home of Central New Jersey to let us know how we can help you and your family.

Right at Home of Central New Jersey Celebrates the 75th Anniversary of the GI Bill and How It's Helped Our Veterans

This Weekend We're Celebrating the
75th Anniversary of the GI Bill

The right people, doing the right things,
the right way, for the right reasons.
Right at Home.

On June 22, 1944, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Serviceman's Readjustment Act (commonly known as the GI Bill) to provide benefits to those veterans returning home from World War II.

Those benefits included expanding health care for veterans, education and vocational training, and low-cost home loans.

Widely considered a great success because of its impact in so many ways on the post-war economy and its investment in the men and women who served (the Greatest Generation), almost half of the World War II veterans made use of its benefits to get a college education, receive better health care or buy a home.

Since the GI Bill went into effect, nearly 24 million homes have been purchased by veterans using the low-cost VA-guaranteed loans.

Right at Home of Central New Jersey celebrates the 75th anniversary of the GI Bill. We honor all of the veterans who have been able to purchase a home because of the GI Bill and we are proud to provide care to those veterans and their families to allow them to continue to age in place and live safely in their homes.

June 21st Is the Longest Day for Alzheimer's Patients

Right at Home of Central New Jersey
Honors Alzheimer's Patients and Their Caregivers on June 21, the Longest Day

The right people, doing the right things,
the right way, for the right reasons.
Right at Home.

For an individual with Alzheimer’s, as well as their loving caregivers, every day is The Longest Day. The Longest Day is about love for those affected by Alzheimer's and for their families and caregivers.

Nearly 6 million people in America suffer from Alzheimer's and that number is projected to grow to 14 million by 2050. One in every three seniors dies experiencing some form of Alzheimer's disease and a new case is diagnosed every 65 seconds.

We at Right at Home of Central New Jersey consider it a privilege to be able to provide care and help to our clients with Alzheimer's and to provide respite care and support to their family members by having our caregivers work with their loved ones. We honor all of those with Alzheimer's and their family members and caregivers today and every day. We share the poem "Two Mothers Remembered" by Joann Snow Duncanson to remind us how we can care for our loved one with Alzheimer's.

I had two Mothers - two Mothers I claim
Two different people, yet with the same name.
Two separate women, diverse by design,
But I loved them both because they were mine.

The first was the Mother who carried me here,
Gave birth and nurtured and launched my career.
She was the one whose features I bear,
Complete with the facial expressions I wear.

She gave her love, which follows me yet,
Along with the examples in life she set.
As I got older, she somehow younger grew,
And we'd laugh as just Mothers and daughters should do.

But then came the time that her mind clouded so,
And I sensed that the Mother I knew would soon go.
So quickly she changed and turned into the other,
A stranger who dressed in the clothes of my Mother.

Oh, she looked the same, at least at arm's length,
But now she was the child and I was her strength.
We'd come full circle, we women three,
My Mother the first, the second and me.

And if my own children should come to a day,
When a new Mother comes and the old goes away,
I'd ask of them nothing that I didn't do.
Love both of your Mothers as both loved you.

Right at Home Can Present an LGBT Older Adult Training Class For Your Community

Right at Home of Central New Jersey Can Present an LGBT Older Adult Training Session For Your Facility or Community

The right people, doing the right things,
the right way, for the right reasons.
Right at Home.

Right at Home of Central New Jersey is proud to announce that since 2016 we have offering to assisted living facilities, rehab centers, long term care facilities and senior centers a free cultural competency training session on working with older LGBT adults.

LGBT older adults are our clients, neighbors, residents, co-workers and friends and they often face unique issues that we believe our cultural competency training session can address.

Right at Home will present information in our training sessions on the ways in-home caregivers as well as your employees can address the unique concerns and service needs of LGBT older adults.

Right at Home of Central New Jersey has been providing both education about and care for older LGBT adults for many years and are proud to continue to do so.

If you are interested in scheduling a training session which can be done either in the morning or as a lunch-and-learn for your staff, please contact Beth Sholom, Owner/Executive Director of Right at Home of Central New Jersey at beth@rahcentral.com. We look forward to sharing this valuable information with all of you.

June Is Men's Health Awareness Month

June Is Men's Health Education
and Awareness Month -
Here's What You Need to Know

The right people, doing the right things,
the right way, for the right reasons.
Right at Home.

During the month that we celebrate Father's Day, we're also being made aware of the health issues that men have and how we can encourage the men we love to take better care of their health.

The goal of Men's Health Education and Awareness Month is to raise awareness of preventable health conditions and encourage early detection and treatment. It may be a cliche' but there are a lot of men who don't think they have the time or need to see a physician on a regular basis. All of us - men and women, young and old - should get regular checkups with our doctors because the more we know about our bodies and our health and the more proactive we are, the better we can care for ourselves. Here's what you can do:

  • Stay active. It can be as simple as walking every day. Studies show that being physically active can lower your risk for heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes.
  • Get enough sleep every night. Making sure you can sleep through the night gives you extra energy and contributes to all your overall physical health.
  • Eat a healthy diet. Making sure grains, vegetables and fruits into your daily intake of food will not only provide extra energy but help maintain a health weight.
  • Get the health screenings your doctor recommends. Getting your eyes and hearing checked, seeing a dentist regularly and having screenings for blood pressure and blood sugar all are important to have done.
  • Maintain a social life. You can't underestimate the value of interacting with other people and its importance to your mental health.
  • Keep mentally sharp. Doing crossword puzzles, reading books, going to see a movie or even playing a video game can help you stay focused.
  • Stop smoking. Besides being so bad for your health, it's an incredibly expensive habit to have.
