Right at Home Has a Smashing Good Time Preparing for Smash Out Alzheimer's

The Right at Home Middlesex and Northern Monmouth Counties Pumpkin Crew spent the morning collecting pumpkins for our Smash Out Alzheimer's event next Sunday at Mattison Crossing! Special thank you to Red Wagon Farm Market, Maple Leaf Farms NJ and Wemrock Orchards for your generous pumpkin donations as well as The Home Depot for the truck rental! Here's What You Need to Know

During the month that we celebrate Father's Day, we're also being made aware of the health issues that men have and how we can encourage the men we love to take better care of their health. 

The goal of Men's Health Education and Awareness Month is to raise awareness of preventable health conditions and encourage early detection and treatment. It may be a cliche' but there are a lot of men who don't think they have the time or need to see a physician on a regular basis. All of us - men and women, young and old - should get regular checkups with our doctors because the more we know about our bodies and our health and the more proactive we are, the better we can care for ourselves. Here's what you can do: 

• Stay active. It can be as simple as walking every day. Studies show that being physically active can lower your risk for heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. 
• Get enough sleep every night. Making sure you can sleep through the night gives you extra energy and contributes to all your overall physical health.
• Eat a healthy diet. Making sure grains, vegetables and fruits into your daily intake of food will not only provide extra energy but help maintain a health weight.
• Get the health screenings your doctor recommends. Getting your eyes and hearing checked, seeing a dentist regularly and having screenings for blood pressure and blood sugar all are important to have done.
• Maintain a social life. You can't underestimate the value of interacting with other people and its importance to your mental health. 
• Keep mentally sharp. Doing crossword puzzles, reading books, going to see a movie or even playing a video game can help you stay focused.
• Stop smoking. Besides being so bad for your health, it's an incredibly expensive habit to have.

On June 6, 1944, the largest air, land and sea operation ever seen (before or since) commenced when Allied troops landed on the beaches at Normandy, France to begin the liberation of Western Europe from Nazi occupation. It is widely held that this surprise invasion (known as D-Day ) was the turning point in winning the war in Europe. Led by General (and later President) Dwight D. Eisenhower, the troops were told: 

"You are about to embark on the great crusade toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle."

Today we celebrate the 75th anniversary of D-Day and honor the 160,000 Allied troops that carried out the D-Day mission. We also remember the 10,000 service members who were killed or wounded that fateful day and thank them for their service. These troops - which saved the world - later became known, thanks to a 1998 book by Tom Brokaw, as the Greatest Generation and their heroic efforts were memorialized in "Saving Private Ryan".

To those brave men and women who fought the war both in Europe and by serving back here at home, Right at Home of Central New Jersey thanks them and are proud to provide care to those of our clients who served. As former Senator John Kerry said: 

"And now that the Greatest Generation is getting older, I think it is the responsibility of all Americans to make sure we do our part for America's seniors. You have earned the best of America and we need to make sure you get the protection and the health care you deserve".

Celebrates All the Cancer Survivors 

The right people, doing the right things, 

the right way, for the right reasons.

June 2 was National Cancer Survivors Day . For 32 years, this health holiday has been observed to not only celebrate those who have survived cancer but to inspire those who have been diagnosed with cancer and to provide support to their families.

As the National Cancer Survivors Day Foundation reminds us:

"Life after cancer is about more than just surviving. 

It's about living. It's about celebrating the milestones, both major and mundane. It's about thriving 

in spite of adversity". 

In order to stay healthy, the Foundation recommends that cancer survivors:

• Get regular exercise which can improve health as well as deal with the fatigue that arises from the disease. 
• Eat a balanced diet.
• Avoid smoking and second-hand smoke. 
• Limit alcohol intake. 
• Maintain a health weight.
• Go for regular check-ups with your medical team.

Says Goodbye as WPLJ Signs Off the Air

May 31 was a sad day for all of us who are New Yorkers. After 48 great years on the air, WPLJ (95.5 on your FM dial) signed off for the last time after being sold to a buyer which is changing the format. We've been entertained by WPLJ with Top 40 hits for most of our lives and listened to their great DJs ranging from Race Taylor to Scott Shannon, Jim Kerr to Rocky Allen, Dave Stewart to Pat St. John.  It's an established scientific principle that music can evoke emotions and those emotions, in turn, can trigger memories. That's why music therapy is used frequently in facilities that work with Alzheimer's and dementia patients. And at Right at Home of Central New Jersey, we have frequently had entertainers play the songs of the 1940s and 1950s at our partner assisted living and rehab center facilities to bring some joy and happy memories to our community.  Music unites us, reminds us, delights us and for many of us, whether young or old, the sound of a song will always bring back memories, sometimes good and sometimes sad. And we could rely on WPLJ to play those songs which are the soundtrack of our lives. That it won't be here any more is a sad day for New Yorkers.
