June 21st Is the Longest Day for Alzheimer's Patients

Right at Home of Central New Jersey
Honors Alzheimer's Patients and Their Caregivers on June 21, the Longest Day

The right people, doing the right things,
the right way, for the right reasons.
Right at Home.

For an individual with Alzheimer’s, as well as their loving caregivers, every day is The Longest Day. The Longest Day is about love for those affected by Alzheimer's and for their families and caregivers.

Nearly 6 million people in America suffer from Alzheimer's and that number is projected to grow to 14 million by 2050. One in every three seniors dies experiencing some form of Alzheimer's disease and a new case is diagnosed every 65 seconds.

We at Right at Home of Central New Jersey consider it a privilege to be able to provide care and help to our clients with Alzheimer's and to provide respite care and support to their family members by having our caregivers work with their loved ones. We honor all of those with Alzheimer's and their family members and caregivers today and every day. We share the poem "Two Mothers Remembered" by Joann Snow Duncanson to remind us how we can care for our loved one with Alzheimer's.

I had two Mothers - two Mothers I claim
Two different people, yet with the same name.
Two separate women, diverse by design,
But I loved them both because they were mine.

The first was the Mother who carried me here,
Gave birth and nurtured and launched my career.
She was the one whose features I bear,
Complete with the facial expressions I wear.

She gave her love, which follows me yet,
Along with the examples in life she set.
As I got older, she somehow younger grew,
And we'd laugh as just Mothers and daughters should do.

But then came the time that her mind clouded so,
And I sensed that the Mother I knew would soon go.
So quickly she changed and turned into the other,
A stranger who dressed in the clothes of my Mother.

Oh, she looked the same, at least at arm's length,
But now she was the child and I was her strength.
We'd come full circle, we women three,
My Mother the first, the second and me.

And if my own children should come to a day,
When a new Mother comes and the old goes away,
I'd ask of them nothing that I didn't do.
Love both of your Mothers as both loved you.
