Right at Home of Central New Jersey
Celebrates the Laughter That
Norman Lear and Mel Brooks Still Bring To Us
The right people, doing the right things,
the right way, for the right reasons.
Right at Home.
It’s often true that it’s easier to learn a lesson taught with laughter than with anger. There are 2 great entertainers who remind us every day that, through film and television, some divisive issues can be addressed by making you think and making you laugh all at the same time.
Norman Lear is 97 years old and is responsible for creating some of the most beloved sitcoms in television history (including All In the Family and The Jeffersons, both which aired during the 1970s) and some of the most iconic television characters (Archie Bunker and George Jefferson).
Recently he oversaw the one-time only special that recreated 2 episodes of All In the Family and The Jeffersons and Lear made a point of not changing a single line of dialogue from the original episodes. The episodes highlighted that the issues that these 2 classic comedy shows dealt with in the 1970s with humor and understanding – racism, homophobia, an unpopular president – still are present today and the issues addressed are still as relevant as they once were.
Mel Brooks, who is 93 years old, is one of the few people to have an EGOT (Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony) and, according to the American Film Institute’s list of 100 Funniest American Movies of All Time , 3 of Mel Brooks’ films (Blazing Saddles, The Producers and Young Frankenstein) are in the top 15 of that list.
As with Norman Lear, Mel Brooks has used his movies to highlight bigotry (Blazing Saddles) and anti-Semitism (The Producers). By showing the ridiculousness of the way people acted and thought in both films and doing it through laughter, Brooks highlighted that there are issues of prejudice we all still need to address.
David Sholom, the son of Beth Sholom (Right at Home of Central New Jersey's Owner/Executive Director), is studying entertainment and arts management at college and his career dream is to become a producer and continue the work of trailblazers like Mel Brooks and Norman Lear who used their art to teach us about equality and fairness.
We at Right at Home of Central New Jersey believe that laughter is the best medicine and we are very appreciative that Norman Lear and Mel Brooks – neither of whom shows signs of slowing down – can still remind us through laughter that the world can be a better place if we all try to make it so.
