There Are Video Resources Available For Those Who Are Caring For A Loved One

When You're Caring For a Family Member, Remember That There Are Video Resources Available To Help You

The right people, doing the right things,
the right way, for the right reasons.
Right at Home.

Sometimes when we take care of a loved one, we can feel alone and think no one else is experiencing what we are. Fortunately there are good resources available to us and we wanted to highlight one for you that resonated with us.

The YouTube series "Ruth and Erica" is a series of 13 videos, each no longer than 8 minutes long, that highlights the relationship between a daughter (Erica) and her mother (Ruth). Erica's father has dementia and dealing with his condition and the reality of her mother starting to become more limited in what she can do makes Erica feel isolated and frustrated. As a single person with no one to help her, Erica struggles to do what's right for her parents while balancing her own needs. Erica tries to convince her parents to consider moving to a senior community where there would be more care for them and where they could be safer but they resist that.

Because the depiction of this family and their struggles are so real, we think many of you who may be in a similar situation will relate. It's difficult to want what's best for your family member while balancing that with their desire to stay independent and maintain control over their own lives. The dynamic of role reversal when you as a child have to parent your mother or father is fraught with challenges and can be a very tricky road to travel.

We hope watching this series will help you but, if you need more help, please call Beth Sholom, Owner/Executive Director of Right at Home of Central New Jersey to let us know how we can help you or your family member. Many of us at Right at Home of Central New Jersey have been caregivers for our own family members so we know what you’re going through and we want to help you. Being a caregiver can make you feel isolated but there are resources and support available to you to help. You are NOT alone!

Please also consider joining our Virtual Caregiver Support Group on Facebook where people who are taking care of their loved ones share their stories and suggestions and advice to all of us who are caregivers for our family members.
