May Is Better Hearing Month -
Here Are Some Things You Should Know
The right people, doing the right things,
the right way, for the right reasons.
Right at Home.
May is National Better Hearing Month and the American Academy of Audiology encourages people to make an appointment with an audiologist if they suspect hearing loss for themselves or their family members.
According to the National Institutes of Health, approximately 15% of Americans 18 and over have some trouble hearing and almost 29 million people could benefit from hearing aids (although fewer than one in three Americans has ever used them).
Some signs of hearing loss may include:
- having to keep turning up the volume of your television or radio (and having your family members tell you the volume is too loud).
- difficulty understanding people speaking to you and asking people to repeat themselves.
- difficulty hearing phone conversations.
- sudden inability to hear doorbells, dogs barking or other household sounds.
- ringing in your ears.
While hearing aids may be the best solution for you or someone you love who has some hearing loss, they're not always the only solution which is why seeing an audiologist is so important. Sometimes partial hearing loss can be temporary or a symptom of another illness or disease and having an audiologist run tests will help determine the cause and recommend the appropriate course of action and treatment.
One of the things you can do right now is download the free hearScreenUSA app (developed in collaboration with the American Academy of Audiology) to your phone. The app allows you to do a simple hearing test and, if hearing loss is detected, the app will connect you with a verified audiologist for further testing and treatment.
