Honors and Remembers All Who Have Sacrificed For Our Country
The right people, doing the right things,
the right way, for the right reasons.
Right at Home.
On Memorial Day we honor those who died in service to our country. Originally known as Decoration Day, it was created in 1868 out of a desire to honor the fallen of the Civil War.
Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae during World War I wrote a poem called "In Flanders Fields" to honor his fallen friends after seeing red poppies appear all over European battlefields. A few years later, inspired by his poem, a woman named Moina Michaels wrote her own poem in response which read:
"We cherish too the Poppy Red
That grows on fields where valor led.
It seems to signal to the skies
That blood of heroes never dies".
She spearheaded the movement to have people wear a red poppy on Memorial Day in honor of all those who died serving our country. Because of her work, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) developed their " buddy poppy " program which sells red poppies made by disabled veterans to anyone who wants to purchase one.
We at Right at Home of Central New Jersey honor those who sacrificed so much for our freedom and our liberty and ask that you wear a buddy poppy on Memorial Day.
