Woodstock Happened 50 Years Ago This Weekend

the right way, for the right reasons.
Right at Home.

50 years ago this weekend, in a little town in upstate New York, the summer of love came to a spectacular close with the Woodstock Festival. Attended by about 500,000 people, it took place over 3 days and was advertised as promoting "peace, love and music".

Over the course of 3 days, over 30 different acts performed including Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Who, Sly and the Family Stone, Santana, Blood, Sweat and Tears, Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Grateful Dead, Joan Baez, and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.

Here are some interesting facts about Woodstock:
  • Jimi Hendrix's performance of the Star Spangled Banner is widely considered the highlight of Woodstock but because he didn't perform it until Monday, most people who had attended the 3-day festival since Friday had already left and didn't hear him play it.
  • Jimi Hendrix was also the artist who was paid the most at the festival: $18,000.
  • Woodstock actually didn't take place in Woodstock; it took place in the town of Bethel, New York.
  • Cartoonist Charles M. Schulz, who created Peanuts, named his newest character (a little yellow bird who wasn't so great at flying) Woodstock in honor of the festival.

Many of the artists who played at Woodstock (and who are now senior citizens) are still performing today. For example, Roger Daltrey and Pete Townsend from The Who are touring through the fall and are releasing an album later this year. All 4 members of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young are still touring and making music. Carlos Santana and his band have been performing all year in their Supernatural Tour celebrating the 50th anniversary of their performance at Woodstock.

Do you remember where you were during the summer of love and the weekend of Woodstock? Sharing memories and playing songs from that time is a great way to engage your parents or grandparents in reminiscing.
