When you or a family member or friend is faced with a minor medical condition, you have to decide if you need to see a doctor. Sometimes getting a same-day doctor's appointment can be challenging.
A new trend in health care is something called point-of-care screenings available at pharmacies. As people age, many of them no longer have primary care physicians, even while their health is changing as they age. Because pharmacies are the most accessible health care options (in terms of hours and days available), many pharmacies are now expanding their services to offer these screenings.
The screenings provide diagnostic testing and treatment options on-the-spot at the pharmacy. For example, minor ailments like strep throat or urinary tract infections can be diagnosed and treated via medication (if needed) usually within 30 minutes. The costs to undergo the testing are relatively low.
Another advantage is that if you need some type of medication, it's available right there at the pharmacy with no need for a doctor to call a prescription in that you'd need to go pick up later. Since many people already go and see their pharmacist for flu or shingles vaccinations , pharmacies see that expanding that to include diagnostic testing for minor ailments seems to be a natural progression to assist their customers.
