For those of us who are baby boomers and grew up in the New York area, Tom Seaver will always be one of our sports heroes. As a team, the New York Mets were not considered a good team until the magical year of 1969 when they went the distance and won the World Series. One of the reasons was was the pitching of Tom Seaver.
Tom Seaver won the Cy Young Award (for the best pitcher) 3 times, including in 1969, the year of their World Series victory. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1992, receiving nearly 99% of all votes.
This year is the 50th anniversary of the Mets' World Series win and plans are already underway for a big celebration, reuniting many of the players from the 1969 team.
But today Tom Seaver's family announced that he has been diagnosed with dementia and has chosen to retire from public life immediately. Although he won't be there, the Mets have announced that he will be honored at the celebration and have invited his family, including his wife of 53 years, Nancy, to attend.
We join with all of the other New York Mets fans in wishing Tom Seaver and his family well, knowing the difficult road they have ahead of them. He'll always be our hero!
