August 21 is National Senior Citizens Day in America. In 1988, President Ronald Reagan issued a proclamation designating the day as one on which all Americans should celebrate and honor the lives and contributions of the generations of Americans that took care of their families, their home towns and our country. 

In 2012, less than 20% of our population in America was over 60 years old but current projections show that by 2050 nearly 30% of the US population will be over 60 years old. 

They say wisdom comes with age but did you also know that senior discounts come with age? Here are some great discounts that you or your parents or senior friends or colleagues are eligible for. 

If you shop at Kohl's and are over 60, you are eligible for a 15% discount every Wednesday. On the first Tuesday of each month, you can get 20% off your total purchase (if you're over 55) at Walgreens . 

If you're planning on travel, a number of hotels offer up to 15% discounts on your stay, as do rental car companies.  A lot of airlines also offer discounts on flights but most require you to call and book over the phone since senior discounts usually aren't featured on their websites. It certainly is worth asking about.

If you like to go to the movies, AMC Theaters offers discounts to those 55 and over when you buy your tickets online. 

Cell phone and internet service can be costly but a number of communication companies like T-Mobile provide discounted customized plans for people aged 55 and older. 

For a more complete list of all the discounts seniors may be eligible for (some starting as early as age 50), the AARP website is always a great place to start. If you're not already a member, their annual membership fee of $16 ($12 during the first year of membership) is well worth the discounts they share and the valuable information on benefits you're eligible for that they can provide for you.

Experts Predict a Growing Population of "Elder Orphans"

AARP experts report that seniors who are receiving care today have an average pool of seven people who can help. But as the boomers themselves begin to need care, the balance will shift alarmingly. Many baby boomers are unmarried and boomers had fewer children. AARP senior policy analyst Lynn Feinberg predicts, "by 2050, the caregiver support ratio, which was 7.2 when boomers were in their peak caregiving years, is projected to drop to 2.9 when the boomers reach their eighties."

It's Important to Share Your Final Wishes Now With Those You Love



Right at Home of Central New Jersey Has Some Suggestions On How to Do That 

The right people, doing the right things,

Dealing with the death of someone we love is one of the most stressful and overwhelming things we can ever go through. Because most of us don't like to think about death, we avoid having conversations with our families about it and what we they need to know and what we would like them to do. 

But having this important conversation now can be very useful and can avoid conflicts, problems and hurt feelings after you pass. The more information you can provide to your family now, the better it will be for them. Here are some things Right at Home of Central New Jersey suggests. 

• If you have a will, please let your loved ones know where it is located and who the executor/executrix is so that person can be prepared about the duties you're asking them to handle. (And, of course, if you don't have a will, now is the time to have one prepared for you. Dying without a will could mean that some of your assets will be disbursed in ways that may not be what you want).
• If you have children under the age of 18, please make sure you designate a legal guardian for them (after you've made sure the person you want to be their guardian is willing and able to take on that role). Tell that person any specific things you want them to know about how you want your children brought up (schooling, religion, etc.) and what type of financial arrangements you have made for their care.
• If you have specific desires or wishes for your funeral or memorial service, it's best to let your family members know that. While dealing with death can be overwhelmingly emotional, having your wishes known can make the process a little easier. There are a number of websites like Five Wishes and Parting Wishes that can help you document all of it. (Vincent Burke, a former Right at Home of Central New Jersey client and the father of our social media manager, Ellen, had completed the Five Wishes document and Ellen and her family were able to do all the things he wanted because her father had taken the time to let them know.)
• There are also books on Amazon and the AARP website that help you gather into one place all the information your family needs to know regarding your financial information, your health care preferences and other vital things they need to know.

Taking these steps now can be a true gift to your family. By documenting your wishes, showing them where your important documents are and letting them know what you want, you can help ease some of the stress that can occur when people have not made decisions or have not documented or shared those decisions with their loved ones.
